Samuel Cary Evans was born in Ohio in 1823. He moved to Riverside, California in 1874 at age 51, where he became the city's most powerful and important business man. He served as president of the Riverside Land and Irrigating Company, the Southern California Colony Association, and the Riverside Canal Company. He died on Sept. 9, 1902 at his home in Riverside. Samuel Cary Evans, Jr. was born November 22, 1866 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of Samuel Cary. and Minerva (Catlin) Evans. The family moved to California in 1874 and settled in Riverside County, where S.C. Evans, Sr. (1823-1902) became one of the founders of the city of Riverside. S.C. Evans, Jr. graduated from the University of the Pacific (San Jose, California) in 1889, where he was the editor of the school magazine, the Pacific Pharos, and the author of the class of '89 song.
